Book Review: The Uncharted Path.

i love reading biography about great people. but i never found a biography book that capture my attention so much, i cant put it down. this book, The Uncharted Path is worth every penny i spent on it, and more...

This is the story of Lee Myung Bak, The President of South Korea.

I bought this book because i would like to get a glimpse of their (Korea)  inside story.  What better way than to see South Korea from the eyes of the President himself? or so i thought..... however, that is not what i found, i got something better....

Lee Myung Bak was a Busan Man. Being the youngest child, i would never expect that he would be the one who become the leader. When his mother conceive Lee Myung Bak, she dream of a bright full moon came and nestled inside her dress. The moon was so bright it's light shone across the fields onto the next village. So when the child was born, she convince the father to name the child Myung (Bright)  Bak (Far reaching).

I was fascinated by his mother. a beautiful soul in the middle of ugly war. She was the original fabric of Lee Myung Bak's life. She lay the foundation of his character and faith when he was growing up in extreme poverty. i see his mother in the step he took and decision he make.

Lee Myung Bak's mother was rooted in deep christian faith. Every morning, she will wake her children up-make them sit down in circle for a morning prayer. Always, she would start of by praying for the well being South Korea., then she would pray for relatives, then comes their neighbor, then would pray for her children. She always remember who is sick, who was going through trouble, and whose child is whom. Always, she would tell her children to go help out their neighbor and accept absolutely nothing in return. not even when they offered foods as a token of gratefulness. Absolutely nothing. She would tell them to go help rich or poor neighbor regardless the neighbor ask for help or not. and when they turn to do as she bid, she would shout a final reminder to their retreating back: "accept absolutely nothing in return". It was years later when Lee Myung Bak finally understood why. She wanted to teach her children the joy of giving and serving, to learn that there is always something you could do to help. That every soul, rich or poor, could use a helping hand. She taught him that Helping means giving joyfully, nothing to gain except for the inner satisfaction it brings. Lee Myung Bak finally understood this, and it help shaped his character tremendously. as time went by, he started to feel good and proud of himself about helping others, accepting nothing in return. The villagers always said that the children in her mother's house were proud but not boastful, sincere but not obsequious.

Years later, when Lee Mung Bak needed books but didn't have the money, it was her mothers kindness to the people around her that made the owner of a second hand bookstore- who was facing financial crisis of his own- decided to help. When their family almost succumb to poverty, it was his mother's deep faith in God that keeps them going. When Lee Myung Bak got married, his wife realized that his mother was the powerful force behind him. Although his wife never met his mother, she was always aware of his mother's presence and his wife too, become a devoted Christian after their marriage, Just like his mother. How amazing is that women, years down the grave, and she still influence people who never met her.

Lee Myung Bak is the 17th Term President of South Korea. His government won some praise and a whole lot of criticism too. As the president of Hyundai construction, he fail some mission, succeeded in some. Nevertheless, together with the owner of Hyundai,  he had lead the company to great success. The revenue bought in by Hyundai, helped Korea to escape bankruptcy, and Hyundai was one of Korea's earliest success story. Regarding his success, Lee Myung Bak always say he wouldn't be who he is today, if not for his hardworking mother and her unfailing faith.

I read this book inside an aeroplane, during my early morning flight to KL yesterday. I tried hard to control my tears, but i can't. i cried all the way to KL and again all the way back to KK. this book worth every penny i spent on it.

Book Review: The Facebook Efect

This book offer a fascinating view inside the company: how it was build, how did it grow, some of it's struggle and where it is going.

I used to see Facebook as just another social network,   a place where i got in touch with old friends (and old flames? hehe!) and another medium for business advertising. I change my mind since :D. after reading this book, i will never see Facebook as just another social network. Unlike Friendster or Myspace, Facebook is more of a platform for information sharing.

i took for granted this social network that i use everyday. it's so simple and easy to use that i didn't realized how much work Mark Zuckerberg put into this. i love how he view the world, and his vision for Facebook is so mature it belied his age. It might be hard for you to believe this, but money had never been his first priority. He wanted to change the world and change the way we interact. You will come to respect him after reading this book. He overcome lots of challenges over the years, challenges that would have eliminate all, except a truly gifted entrepreneurs.

forget what you saw on the big screen, get this book for a second opinion... and you will see him in a different light.
